The Dell PowerVault ME412 is a 2U expansion enclosure for twelve 3.5-inch drives with a 12 Gb/s SAS interface. It does not operate on its own: it is a capacity module for PowerVault ME series arrays and attaches to them over a SAS cascade.

This kind of expansion is chosen when the primary array runs out of drive bays and buying a second full storage system makes no economic sense. Capacity grows while management, volumes and policies stay on the existing controllers.
