The Dell PowerVault MD2412 is a 2U direct-attached disk enclosure (JBOD) for twelve 3.5-inch drives, the entry model of the new MD24xx generation with a 24 Gb/s SAS interface. It is the capacity option of the line: built for 7,200 rpm NL-SAS drives up to 20 TB when a server needs many inexpensive terabytes — video surveillance archives, file storage, a disk target for backups. PowerVault MD24xx is the 2024 generation of direct-attached enclosures that replaced the MD1400/MD1420. The key difference is the 24 Gb/s SAS (SAS-4) interface with 12/24 Gb/s autosensing — twice the bandwidth per port. The enclosure has no controllers or cache of its own: RAID and volumes live on the PERC H965e or HBA465e of a 16th- or 17th-generation PowerEdge server, while PERC H840 and HBA355e are supported on 14G/15G servers. Two hot-swap EMM modules, managed through the server's iDRAC or the SHMCLI utility.

One HBA355e, H965e or HBA465e controller cascades up to eight MD2412 enclosures — 96 drives and up to 1.92 PB raw with 20 TB drives; a PERC H840 supports up to four. MD2412 cannot be mixed with MD2424 or MD2460 on the same chain.
