The Dell PowerVault MD1400 is a 2U direct-attached disk enclosure (JBOD) for twelve 3.5-inch drives with a 12 Gb/s SAS interface. Unlike a full storage array it has no controllers, cache or storage logic of its own: RAID and volume management stay on the server it is attached to.

This is the cheapest way to add a large amount of disk space to a server. The enclosure connects to the server's RAID controller or HBA over SAS and appears to the operating system as a set of drives. Typical uses are file storage, video surveillance archives and a disk target for backups.
